Event organiser Alex Adams, also known as Ms Darlinghurst, is the brains behind Secret Foodies and Eat Drink Play. Between running secret dining events in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne she shares an office with the IWannaTicket team.
We bailed her up in the corridor to play 10 questions and share some of her event wisdom.
What is Secret Foodies all about?
We host secret dining experiences in Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland. People buy a ticket to a secret dinner and they don’t know where they’re going and who they’re going to meet. They get a text message with the details two hours beforehand telling them where to go. They arrive and meet some cool people and have a great time. We do public ticketed events as well as private events for people who want to surprise their friends.
What do you love about working in events?
I love starting with a concept and bringing it to life and seeing it come together at the end. I love making people happy!
You run amazing themed events – what is your favourite theme?
I really liked the Safari themed event we did one year, that way really cool!
What’s next for Secret Foodies?
We’ve just launched in Queensland earlier this year so at the moment we are taking over Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast and we’ve got our sights set on the Gold Coast.
How does online ticketing help your events?
We’ve been using IWannaTicket pretty much since we started, before that it was getting people to put money in to my bank account which I realised pretty quickly wasn’t sustainable. It just means everything is in one place, it’s all centrally located. It’s an integral part of our business.
You’ve been running events since 2010, how have things changed for Secret Foodies in this time?
As well as expanding in to other cities we run a lot of private events now and we use IWannaTicket to help us manage those events as well. We often like to set up an event for our customers who are inviting their friends along to private events for their birthdays or hens nights to help them collect the money from their guests.
Which IWannaTicket features do you find most useful?
Customising our page so it looks like Secret Foodies website I love, I don’t have competing events on the website like a lot of other platforms. I also really love that I can have different types of tickets for different days and different prices. I can issue credit notes which I love and I can have all my gift vouchers on there.
What is your number one tip for other event organisers?
Have a plan!
What’s the funniest thing that’s happened at one of your events?
We ask all our chefs what they like to eat, drink and how they play in Sydney and we recently had a chef who told us he loves to sing Chinese Opera. So we persuaded him to sing for us and he belted out this incredible Chinese Opera tune for us. Everyone was cheering and we all loved it, it was amazing.
And finally, Ms Darlinghurst: what type of events do you like to attend?
